Blog EntryRecce for My Martial Art Training LocationAug 17, '06 10:12 PM
for everyone

I'm hunger for my training now. It has been a long break. I missed the fun. Although sometimes I feel de-motivated due to the distance I have to travel.

There's a new private Taekwondo school just opened near my neighbourhood and school fee is S$150 for unlimited trainings (weekdays/weekends). I'll probably train there until I am ready to go for my 3rd Dan grading due in April 2007.

On Aikido, I thought of changing my training location to Siglap South Community Center. The training fee at community centers as far cheaper compared to a private building.

After a thorough consideration, I have decided to stay on with Aikido Shinju-Kai's Headquarter at Span-JOM Clubhouse although it is much more expensive. The monthly fee is about S$45 with a one-time annual membership of S$25.

What I like about training in HQ is the opportunity of training with seniors and leaders. Some are very helpful to guide you and you get to learn faster.

Comparing both martial arts, it is not like what people think - pain and violence. In fact they are taught in a peaceful and safe environment. I have never involved in a real fight (or street fight). I don' know if I am able to defense myself if I am under attack. However, I am very sure of one thing, and that is, I will avoid any hostile situation, I will not provoke, unless I am forced to.

Training in martial arts, rock climbing, in-line skating, river kayaking ...just to name a few, are good ways to strengthen your mental and spiritual self.

Blog EntryMartial Arts - Weekends WarriorAug 7, '06 1:09 AM
for everyone

About 2 years ago, when I was very active in sports and martial arts, my weekends were very busy and packed with martial art classes.

That time, I helped my Aikido instructors to take on the beginner class and even take over the class when he has something on or late for class.

I never complain, I think I had used up my weekends wisely, although I hate rushing from one point to another to get there in time.

Being so actively involved in the teaching and general admin, I get promoted fast in Aikido. I was the right hand to my instructor until one day, some misunderstanding made me left the class. I stopped Aikido for 1 year until I decided to sign up with Aikido Shinju-kai. After the first 3 months training starting from scratch, I enrolled for my first grading and granted double pass. I love training with Aikido Shinju-kai, more seniors to practice with, some are very helpful, some are merely intimidating!.

In Taekwondo, I am one of the most senior female assistant instructors. I went for NCAP Level one organised by Singapore Sport Council but somehow  never get the full certificates due to some administrative cock-up.

It has been nearly 3 yrs now, I haven't been active in martial arts due to other commitment. And I stopped jogging 3 times per week due to my foot injury.

Lately, I started to run again. I run for about 9km at East Coast Park, clocking my time as an average 1 hr per session. I am planning to go back for my Aikido next year and may go for my Teakwondo 3rd Dan grading by 1st quarter 2007.

I know I need to go back for training and build up my stamina again. However, the recent involvement in photography and potential modelling assignment have kept me busy for the past few months.

And I promised myself that i'll be back in action... very soon.

Sometimes, people just don't believe that I am practising martial arts. In fact, martial art is by far the most challenging sport I have ever participated in. Besides rock climbing and in-line skating. they are challenging in a way that you have to balance yourself, maintain composure, good timing, strategy, stay alert, etc. It trains you to be prepared for any unexpected situation...

Capoeira is the Brazilian martial art..its a dance like fight and a fight like dance..very interesting and exciting to look.

The International Capoeira festival also features other folkloric artforms like Macu Lele (which look like the philipines' Escrima..once again look
like dance), Samba dancing and Batucada (percussion performance, Brazilian style).

You can reach Madeira at 9 833 0164.
E-mail: madeira1@singnet.com.sg

The event will be held at Suntec, Rock Auditorium. 25th September(Saturday) from 4 - 8pm

Its a rare opportunity to witness the Brazilian culture performed by true blue masters in Singapore so hope to hear from you soon.

Peace out.
