After the renovations, Aston has become slightly bigger and most importantly, cooler! The temperature inside is always a big minus for the dining.

Their options for us to choose two side dishes for each main dish is applaudable since I normally hate whipped potatoes! Try their garden veggies! Beside the steaks, I think their fish n chips are not bad and their lamb chops are great! Unfortunately, I think their chicken dishes are not really to my satisfaction.

I greatly hope that people will stop thronging the place so that I dun need to queue so long just to get a place inside! But i dun think my hopes will be easily fufilled.

The buzz: The new and improved Aston Specialties sees hungry hordes at its door each lunch and dinner time. If you’re lucky to nab a seat, you’ll find the wait for your food slightly longer than at most coffeeshops or hawker centres. But you’re likely to forgive that fact when you sink your teeth into Astons' fare. The menu features the usual suspects - steaks, chicken, fish, pork chop, ribs and burgers - but regulars swear by the joint’s beef dishes. The Rib Eye Steak, priced at SGD 14.50, is a thick, succulent slab of perfectly grilled beef - better than those served at many steak houses. The Aston ieatSuperburger - 200g of chopped sirloin with bacon, cheese, tomato, onions and fried egg in a sesame bun - is a steal at only SGD 12.50.

Check out: For carnivores who wonder what the deal is with Wagyu, Astons' Wagyu Ribeye, added to the menu only in October, lets you finally answer that question without burning a hole in your pocket. At SGD 38.50, the 200g Wagyu Ribeye, with two side dishes, is great value for money. Just remember you have to order it three days in advance.

Opening hours: 12 noon to 1am (Tuesday to Thursday); 12 noon to 3am (Friday to Saturday); 12 noon to 1am (Sunday)

This is the Katong outlet and restaurant of Glory Catering which makes a wide range of traditional confections, kuehs, and festive snacks. The shop is a mini-restaurant (air-con) where you can savour nasi padang and curries. The front of the shop displays and sells a wide range of fresh kuehs, agar-agar (seaweed jelly), glutinous rice dumplings (bak chang) and packaged festive cookies and snacks (peanut biscuits, pineapple tarts, egg rolls and tarts etc). All the food is halal including the bakchang, so you only get chicken meat in the meat version of the dumplings.

Halia – Malay for ginger – is located in the 1-ha Ginger Garden of the Singapore Botanic Gardens where over 250 species of gingers with their stunning foliage and colourful flowers thrive.

The construction of Halia was carried out simultaneously with the development of the Ginger Garden. Careful consideration was given to the special park setting, such that architecture conformed to the contours of the land, the dignity of mature trees and the preservation of heritage.

The result is an unobtrusive dining room with full height glass windows, beckoning the greenery indoors, and allowing guests to dine in the Garden whilst still comfortably ensconced in cool surroundings. Decades-old majestic palm trees stand like sentries, guardian-witness to the earthy beauty that is the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

In the heat of the day, guests take refuge in the coolness of Halia’s air-conditioned dining room whilst still enjoying views of the Garden through its full-height glass windows.

Extending from the dining room, a sheltered wooden deck enables sun-worshippers to bask in the sultry warmth whilst enjoying an al-fresco meal.

Come nightfall, Halia is transformed into an intimate and special place, lit only by discreet lamps, candles and the moonlight. A perfect place for a romantic evening, or a gathering of special friends or business associates, guests are surrounded by the tranquility of the Garden and the beauty of the night.

How To Get There?

By Car

As the Singapore Botanic Gardens has several entrances, we advise diners to enter via Tyersall Avenue (same access to the National Orchid Garden and Burkill Gate).

Public coupon parking is available on the road just at the entrance to the Ginger Garden. Alternatively, coach lots on the road are available for free parking of cars from 6 pm onwards.

From the Ginger Garden gate, Halia is a pleasant 3-minute stroll past a man-made waterfall and lush greenery. Halia is located just at the edge of the Ginger Garden, beside the National Orchid Garden.

Alternative parking is available at the Cluny Gate and Tanglin Gate entrances. From there, it is an equally enjoyable walk of 10 to 15 minutes to Halia Restaurant.

By Bus

Disembark at the bus stop nearest to Tyersall Avenue.

The last in the series, Jose indicates in the liner notes that he is going to work on other projects than the Cafe del Mar series, ends with a mellow almost 70's feel to it. It certainly is a lot less jazz influenced than the last album whilst retaining that slightly dreamy flow to itself. Only a few tracks really stand out as being noteable in & of themselves (Talvin Singh's 'Traveller', Mandalay's 'Beautiful' and dZihan & Kamien's 'Homebase' ) but the rest work as a whole and the tone of the album is a slightly wistful one, dreaming of past times.

It is a strong, but not blockbuster, end to a series that I will miss greatly. However based on Jose's solo album 'Souvineir' I look forward to his other musical endeavours with interest. Jose is a talented artist in his own right and while I am slightly sad to see the series stop I do want to see what he will produce when unencombered by the demands of compiling. We have seen hints of it with some of compilation discs featuring tracks Jose has either written or remixed. Now it is time for the man himself to come out fully from the shadows and show us what he can do.
