Big Ben's Bakery claims to serve authentic British pies. According to Ben, the chef and owner, his recipes are originally from a British lady who shared her recipes with Ben's father-in-law. To us, whether it's authentic or not, what matters most is taste!
The lowdown:
The pies are made of short crust pastry which are welcomed by those who like local curry puffs but disappoint those who prefers puff pastry for their pies. Big Ben's pastry is light and pretty thin in texture, so you don't get a floury aftertaste when you bite into its pies. As short crust pastry is a little drier, we prefer fillings that are slightly more moist to give a balanced taste in our mouths. There are about 10 different varieties and we have a few favourites.
Top on our list is the steak and mushroom. Tasty with a little gravy, the tender beef pieces are mixed with vegetables and sizable mushroom slices. Some of our makanmatas who have stronger taste buds like the steak and kidney and the Irish lamb stew. Both fillings are delicious and not very salty but the kidney and the lamb have strong a smell and the taste is really pungent. You have to acquire a taste for these, otherwise, skip them.
Besides the savoury ones, you can try the apple and pineapple pies. The apple pie has a light cinnamon touch while the pineapple is a tad too generous with sugar.
In general, the pies are light in texture and easy to eat. Most pies cost between $2.50 to $3 but you can order huge ones for about $10 to $12.
